    The regional museum named after Johann Friedrich Danneil shows interesting exhibits from the history of the western Altmark. The permanent and special exhibitions give u. a. Insights into the culture and way of life of the inhabitants of the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel in past centuries.

    Salzwedeler Madonna in the Danneil-Museum SalzwedelA special attraction for visitors is the Salzwedel Madonna, a unique seated Madonna of the transitional style from Romanesque to Gothic. Likewise, the vineyard altar by Lucas Cranach the Younger, as an impressive testimony to the history of the Reformation, represents a significant image beyond the borders of the Altmark.

    A large number of exhibits provide insights into the everyday life of the past in 16 exhibition areas. Historical furniture, weapons, old guild craft, masterpieces of church art and other things testify to the craftsmanship of Altmark craftsmen and artists.

    Danneil Museum Salzwedel visitors can also explore the history of the Salzwedeler Baumkuchen. Traditionally significant is the collection of archaeological finds dating back to Johann Friedrich Danneil. Danneil is also considered a co-founder of the 3-period system of prehistory and early history with their division into the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. A great merit Danneils was also the complete recording and publication of the Altmarkischen Hünen- or Großsteingräber at the beginning of the 1840s.

    The largest exhibit itself is the museum building in the former provost, a picturesque and historically significant area at St. Mary's Church. This impressive half-timbered building with staircase tower was built in the Renaissance as the seat of the Altmark noble family von der Schulenburg.
