The well-preserved old town, which dates back to the Neolithic period, is surrounded by the ruins of the medieval city wall. With its half-timbered houses and small alleys, Alzey has its own idyllic charm. A section of the Selz, a left tributary of the Rhine, flows through the city, partly underground. Alzey is one of the Nibelungen cities. Volker von Alzey, who plays a character in the Nibelungen, mentions it in the Nibelungenlied. That is why it is also called Volkerstadt. The center of the city of Alzey is the horse market with the Volker fountain and Volker's horse Max.
