9월 10, 2025, Restored Selz River Near Schafhausen
The renaturalized Selz River near Schafhausen is a prime example of successful nature conservation in Rheinhessen. This section of the Selz River south of Alzey-Schafhausen has undergone extensive ecological enhancement in recent years – and you'll notice this immediately when you walk along it.

The story behind the Goose Fountain is as follows: As recently as the beginning of the 20th century, communal goose-herding existed in some Rhenish-Hessian towns, including Bechtolsheim. The shepherd would go from farm to farm, blowing the horn to gather the geese, sometimes several hundred of them, which he would lead out of the village into the fields and meadows to graze. In the evening, they would return. I think it's great that the knowledge of this tradition isn't lost... so this fountain is something like a "Rhenish-Hessian knight's stone"!

Really wonderful renaturation. There are lots of places to sit and watch waterfowl.

Exceptional fountain that reflects a tradition of Bechtolsheim. Very beautiful and very complex. A plaque explains precisely the origin of this tradition

The observation tower on the Hemm! As a landmark that can be seen from afar, the tower stands on the Hemm in the Lonsheim Forest and is firmly rooted in the consciousness of the citizens of Lonsheim. From the top of the tower you have a wonderful view of the Rhenish-Hessian hill country. When the weather is good, you can let your gaze wander from the Odenwald in the east, over the northern Taunus to the western Hunsrück. If you turn your gaze to the south, the Donnersberg is right at your feet. It is also possible, with a little time and patience, to locate and identify up to 20 different locations. The field name "Auf der Hemm" is one of the oldest field names in Lonsheim.

The renaturation is really bearing fruit here! We were surprised that the water level in the area is unusually high. Now we have found the cause in the form of a 1.20 m high beaver dam. The beaver has thus created an ideal habitat for itself.

At this point / I would like to quickly / say something about the source: To quote the incomparable humorist Heinz Erhardt (1909 - 1979), who was known to a wide audience for his pun and “Noch'n Gedicht”, with a short quatrain: "There is certainly a lot of beautiful about it, on the element, the wet. Because you can drink the water. But you can - also leave it alone. " (H.Erhardt)

As a memorial to the many dead, such memorials or war memorials are still very important today. "Now, Lord, let your servant go in peace, as you said." However, the people who are commemorated here did not divorce in peace, but became victims of war and tyranny. Many of the places and monuments that you come across along the way are evidence of the horrors of war and tyranny, which is still relevant and relevant today. They all have two essential functions, and this for each new generation: -1- Commemorate and remember the victims -2- Remind to keep the peace

Unfortunately, the indoor area is currently completely scaffolded. But you still get an idea of the imposing war memorial.

Below the Alzeyer core area, the Selz passes the Schafhausen district, after which the Weidas flows into. A lot has happened in terms of renaturation along the 61 km long river, and you come across such sections and corresponding information boards again and again.

With 5,000 m³ of water per day, the Seebach spring is the most important and richest spring in Rheinhessen. The water temperature is a constant 9 degrees and the quality directly at the outlet can be equated with mineral water - that's really amazing! Source: www.wonnegau.de

When the weather is nice, from the Zeller monument you have a great view over the Zellertal, to the Donnersberg and over the Rhine plain to the Odenwald.

Also interesting are the well-fed fish in the water, which is probably due to the fish feeder across the street ;-)

The Seebach spring is an artesian fault spring. The water comes from the deepest water sources and could be 10,000 years old. https://www.wonnegau.de/a-seebachquelle

The Seebach runs right through the old town center of Westhofen. Once a year the traditional grape blossom festival takes place here, at which the vaulted cellars are also open and invite you to enjoy a glass of Westhofen wine. It is really full here around the Seebach
