Layen Castle stands on a rocky ridge in the Trollbachtal. It was built before 1200 and mentioned in documents as "Veste Laiga". The ownership structure at that time is not clearly clarified. Both the Rhinegraves and the Lords of Bolanden come into question. Until the expropriation by the French in 1796, the counts' families changed several times through inheritance. From the Lords of Bolanden it came to the Counts of Sponheim-Tannenfels, then to the Counts and later Princes of Nassau-Saarbrücke and Nassau-Weilburg. Layen Castle was not inhabited by the noble owners but as a fiefdom by knights and nobles who also exercised local authority over Rümmelsheim. Baron Wolfgang Heribert von Dalberg (1750-1806) became the owner of parts of Layen Castle through his marriage to Elisabetha Augusta Freiin Ullner von Dieburg. He managed to reverse the expropriation by the French and sold Layen Castle to Johann Peter Diel. The castle is still family-owned today under the name Weingut Schlossgut Diel. Parts of the 800-year-old castle cellar, the castle gibel as well as the bakery and farm building have been owned by the Höfer family, now Dr. Thomas Höfer, Schlossmühle winery Dr. Höfer.
