5월 7, 2025, Altes Schloss Ruins (1850)
📍 Dream Loop Bärenbach Trail Remains of ruins, moss-covered stones, and a place that whispers stories – the so-called "Old Castle" is no longer a classic castle, but a place with soul. The remains of the walls seem like they come from another era, surrounded by dense forest and mysterious silence. A place for explorers and dreamers. 💡 Tip: It's a good moment to pause for a moment and imagine what it used to be like here. If you sharpen your eyes, you'll still recognize clear structures – and perhaps even a hint of history in the breeze.

An old castle from the 1850s. You wouldn't think of something like that when you see the sign "to the old castle." 😄

4월 5, 2025, Birkenfeld Castle Observation Tower
Birkenfeld Castle was first documented in 1293 as a Sponheim property. At the end of the 16th century, Duke Charles expanded it into a princely palace in the Renaissance style. Count Palatine Charles founded the Wittelsbach branch of the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld, who became Electors of Bavaria in 1799 (and Kings from 1806). With the French invasion, the castle was declared French national property and auctioned in Trier in 1807. The complex could no longer be maintained by private hands and thus fell into disrepair. Parts of the outer walls and tower stumps, one of which was converted into an observation tower, as well as the former guesthouse with the gatehouse of the castle entrance, remain. 11월 13, 2022, Frauenburg Castle Ruins
The namesake of the castle and the village of Frauenberg is one of the most colorful female figures of the Middle Ages and proof that women have always played a decisive role in shaping our country's history. Loretta came from the Salm family of counts, wealthy in the Vosges Mountains near Strasbourg, which also maintains dynastic connections in the Luxembourg and Hunsrück regions to this day. In early 1315, not yet 20 years old, she married the much older Count Henry II of Sponheim Starkenburg. Henry died in 1323, and Loretta moved with her three sons to Starkenburg Castle near Trarbach. Loretta was now responsible for managing the county's affairs as guardian of her son, John III, who was probably only eight years old. This castle protruded like a thorn into the Electorate of Trier and threatened to endanger the possessions along the Moselle and around Koblenz. Archbishop Baldwin ruled in Trier. As an elector and brother of an emperor, he was one of the most powerful men in the empire and now considered the time had come to expand his holdings by occupying Sponheim's estates against a supposedly weak woman. 7월 8, 2022, Burg Veldenz (Nohfelden)
The spur castle was first mentioned in 1285. Its builder, Wilhelm Bossel II vom Stein, who came from Oberstein an der Nahe, had to grant the Count of Veldenz the right to open his castle in the deed. After the vom Stein family died out, the castle passed to the Counts of Veldenz. In the middle of the 15th century, the dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken acquired the castle and the dominion of Nohfelden. Until the French Revolution, the castle was the seat of a Zweibrücken bailiff. In 1490 the castle witnessed one of the saddest chapters in the history of Palatinate-Zweibrücken. After the death of Duke Louis the Black, his sons Kaspar and Alexander ruled together for a year when Alexander had his older brother deposed by force. He was taken to Veldenz Castle and remained there – even after the death of his brother – in captivity until his death in 1527. In the many wars of the 17th century, the castle did not go unmolested, but was always maintained. In 1661 Duke Friedrich died at the castle. In 1804 the castle was declared French national property and sold to the Cetto brothers from St. Wendel. After that, the castle complex, which was now used to procure building materials, fell into disrepair. Today's owner of the castle ruins is the municipality of Nohfelden.

Unfortunately, you can only see a little of the castle. Only the castle inn, the castle gate and a few stumps of towers.

Below the castle was the castle house, which is mentioned in several medieval documents. It was probably destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. In a forest map by geometer Werner from 1759, the castle house is only faintly marked, probably because it was already a ruin at the time.

𝗕𝘂𝗿𝗴𝗵𝗮𝘂𝘀 The "Burghaus im Tal zu Frauenberg", located directly on the Ellenbach, was mentioned in many documents. In 1347, Gottfried von Spohnheim, the youngest son of Countess Loretta von Sponheim-Starkenburg and in his capacity the progenitor of the Lords of Allenbach, received the castle house as a fief. He was allowed to defend himself against anyone. In the document, a "Gezelin" is named as the previous owner, which suggests that it was built by the Cistercian order. The ruins may be Ellinbagh Castle, mentioned in a document from 1265. Source: text information board

The Countess of Trier - 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺 𝗟𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗮 𝘃𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗺 - 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗴 An extraordinary woman of the 14th century. At the age of 27, the young widow took over the rule of the county in 1323 and ruled it with a strong hand for her three children until 1331. She made history through her daring capture of the most powerful imperial prince, Baldwin of Trier, in 1328. This shocked all of Europe, led to her being outlawed by the Emperor and excommunicated by the Pope, but she nevertheless asserted her claims, forcing Baldwin to sign a reconciliation treaty. After handing over the rule to her son, she renounced Herrstein as her widow's residence and chose Frauenburg instead, where she also spent her final years. In early 1346, the countess, not yet 50 years old, died and was buried next to her husband in Himmerod Abbey. Source: Text information panel Fortress of the Countess Built before 1327 as a fortress for the southwestern parts of the County of Sponheim-Starkenburg and the Nahe River crossing. Only the inner castle area survives. It was chosen in 1331 by Loretta von Sponheim as a widow's residence instead of the contractually secured Herrstein Castle. After the countess's death, the castle became the official residence of the bailiffs of the Frauenberg domain, which also encompassed the towns of Reichenbach, Hammerstein, Ausweiler, Kronweiler, and the lordly estates of Winnenberg and Homerich. The castle was rarely used. During the Thirty Years' War, the uninhabited castle fell into disrepair. It is possible that the 30 x 10 m remains still standing today were built on a Roman site (burgus). The small tower is said to be the place where Rapunzel lived. Source: Text information board
