The hiking trail through the Gregnitz Valley leads past a boulder in the streambed with two circular depressions of different sizes; these are the legendary gold panning stones, also known as the Venediger bowls. Legend has it that the Venediger panned for gold there. The gold-bearing stones were placed in the larger depression, crushed, and the sand grains were then washed out by the Gregnitz water. The gold was said to have remained in the granite hollow. In reality, however, the depressions are hollows in the granite created by erosion, as scientists have determined. A very beautiful wildlife park in Mehlmeisel (Fichtelberg), an interesting visit for adults and children alike. However, you should definitely be there for the guided tour and feeding. The staff are very attentive to feeding and explaining the animals. Another highlight for children are the goats and sheep that can be petted and fed. Guided tours and feedings are available daily from 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
