It is the world's only completely preserved ironworks from the heyday of industrialization and offers a unique insight into the history of iron and steel production. The Völklinger Hütte is a former ironworks founded in 1873 and was closed down in 1986. In 1994, UNESCO elevated the pig iron production of the Völklinger Hütte to the status of a World Heritage Site as the first industrial monument from the age of industrialization.
