Not only traces of the Celtic era can be found on the "Korches," as it is called by the locals, but rare plants such as the Kordigast whitebeam are also native here. From its plateau, the Grosser Kordigast offers, on a clear day, distant views as far as the Franconian Forest and the Fichtel Mountains. Family-friendly hiking trails lead along the "Schlauwienix" nature trail to the popular "Spielwienix" adventure playground.

In the 14th century the city was surrounded by a curtain wall with three gates: the lower or Bamberg gate, the upper or Kronacher gate (both still preserved) and the Mühl or Coburg gate. Of the five defense towers, only the Red Tower remains today. A large part of the city wall, which was renewed several times in the 17th century, was demolished in the 19th century, mainly during the construction of the railway in 1844/45.
