During World War II, the castle was confiscated by the SS and, after the war, served as an outpost of the Landsberg prison, where the Americans housed war criminals. Refugees were then housed in the castle. The owner, Count Ludwig von Maldeghem, gave a large portion of his land in the village to the local community due to the housing shortage caused, in no small part, by refugees. The dilapidated castle was completely renovated from the ground up at the instigation of Count Ludwig von Maldeghem starting in 1970, and a 9-hole golf course was built around it in the early 1990s. The castle remains owned by the Counts of Maldeghem and is not open to the public.

Pöring Castle is a castle in the north of today's Pitzling, a district of Landsberg am Lech. It contains Gothic elements, but was restored in the 19th century in a neo-Gothic style. The castle was built in the 9th or 10th century in the village of Pöring (1140 Peringin) and was the property of the Wessobrunn monastery and also a fief. It had been owned by the von Peringen family since the 14th century. The von Holdingen family lived in the castle from 1546 to 1694. They owned the "Mother of God on the ship", a statue of Mary from the 15th century, which prompted the Marian pilgrimage in Pöring from 1731. Since the pilgrims came in large numbers, the small castle chapel was replaced by the castle church. The Castle Church of Pöring Maria von der Versöhnung was built between 1764 and 1766. The stucco work was made by Dominikus Zimmermann. After the onslaught of pilgrims died down, Zimmermann had to simplify the church and eventually even paint the church himself. In 1844 Karl Freiherr von Leoprechting acquired the castle and lived there until 1857. Frequently changing owners followed.
