Anyone who thinks the mother tower was once part of Landsberg's city defense is wrong. It was only built in the late 19th century by the graphic artist and painter Hubert von Herkomer in honor of his mother. Today the tower can be booked for all kinds of occasions. Attached to him is the Herkomer Museum, with an important collection of his works. The tower is located in an inviting park. Its golden roof in particular attracts attention from afar.

Very well described, by Udo in the open air: the graphic artist and painter Herkomer built it in the late 19th century in memory of his mother.
The tower and the adjacent Herkomermuseum are located directly on the Lech and in a lush green oasis.

The mother tower is located in Landsberg am Lech in Bavaria (Germany) in a small park on the west bank of the river Lech.

It was built by the painter, sculptor, musician, writer and pioneer of automobile racing in Germany, Sir Hubert von Herkomer (1849-1914) in honor of his mother, after his parents had moved to Landsberg (near her) from England in 1877 at his mother's request hometowns Waal and Denklingen) had withdrawn and the mother had already died by Christmas 1879.

A striking tower, of course much too new for part of the city fortifications, too lavishly decorated, wrong location and lacking functionality - just take a closer look and you'll notice all the inconsistencies. But a nice meeting place where you can also relax in the café if you prefer it a little quieter than in the city center on the other side of the Lech.

On the next visit in 1880, Herkomer acquired the property next to his parents' house and began to have a 30-meter-high tower built according to his own design, which, for cost reasons, dragged on until around 1887. In addition to a room of honor for the mother and later also for the father, there was also space for a studio in the tower.
The tower is an asymmetrical tuff ashlar building divided into five floors. It is assumed that the architect Henry Hobson Richardson, who was very well known in the USA at the time, had a stylistic influence, although Herkomer could not have met him personally until the end of 1885.
On September 2, 1888 Herkomer married his third wife, his sister-in-law Margaret Griffiths, in the mother tower, for which he had to take German citizenship and was naturalized in Landsberg. which was built in Herkomer's English hometown of Bushey from about 1886. Hubert von Herkomer, who had emigrated from Germany with his parents in 1851, had lived there since 1873 and founded a school for painting in 1883.
In 1939, at the time of intense anti-German sentiment at the start of World War II, this villa, often called "Bavarian castle" by the locals, was largely demolished - officially due to exorbitant maintenance costs. Only the portal and part of the entrance area remained, today part of the British Legion Hall.
Since 1990, the original residential building, which is connected to the Mother Tower by a closed and covered wooden bridge, has housed the Herkomer Museum with around 100 exhibits, including paintings, sculptures and graphics from the holdings of the municipal Herkomer Foundation, as well as a registry office .
