Fronte Beckers This well-preserved part of the fortress, over 250 meters long, impressively illustrates the historical fortification system with its moat defense (horseshoe), the main rampart, the posterns and underground mine galleries. Today, the moat defense houses the municipal music school and the youth center. Source: https://www.germersheim-erleben.eu/Sehenswertes/

The history of the castle goes back to the Romans, who lived here before the Limes around 100 AD. have built a fortification. To protect against the Hungarian cavalry that came here around 930, a fortification made of large stone blocks was built, the remains of which can still be seen today. A moated castle in Kislau was first mentioned in 1038. Kislau Castle was then designed in 1721 by Damian Hugo von Schönborn, Prince-Bishop of Speyer, as a hunting lodge in the baroque style. Through the secularization of church property in 1803, Kislau became part of Baden. In 1813 the castle was converted into a barracks and military hospital for the Grand Ducal Baden Invalid Corps. A state prison was set up here in 1824 and an internment camp during the Baden Revolution of 1848/49. Many students from Heidelberg were trapped here. In 1933, Hitler turned it into a concentration camp for political prisoners. After the Second World War, in 1946, it provided accommodation for displaced Sudeten Germans for a short time. Since 1948, the castle has been a branch of the Bruchsal Correctional Facility for the “stumbled prison system”. Open enforcement has been practiced here since 1997 and since 2015, consideration has been given to building a learning center on the history of the Baden resistance and National Socialism.
