Here, too, a mighty structure - in the middle of a gate leads through. On the outside, both the Bavarian King Ludwig I and the builder of the fortress Colonel Friedrich Ritter are depicted in armor. In the building is the city and fortress museum.

There were originally two entrances to the city, namely the Ludwigstor (originally German Thor) in the northwest and the Weißenburger Tor (originally French Thor) in the east.

The foundation stone of Germersheim Fortress, which was opened in 1937, is also located near the gate. The second gate is the Weissenburg Gate. Both gates are beautifully lit at night!

The Weissenburg Gate and the Ludwig Gate were the two entrances to the city during the time of the fortress and were well guarded. Six years after work began on the construction of the fortress, the Ludwig Gate was completed. The two-story building is 73 m long and had to be built on a grid of 850 oak posts because of its location in the area of the "Woog" (former marshland). The outer facade of the building is decorated with statues showing two warriors in a knightly idealized depiction, which according to tradition represent the Bavarian King Ludwig I (1825-1848) and the builder of the Germersheim fortress, engineer colonel Friedrich Ritter von Schmauß (1792-1846).
On the inside of the Ludwig Gate is the "City and Fortress Museum", which displays its extensive collections on the history of the city and fortress on an exhibition area of over 1500 m². [Note: temporarily closed in November 2024]

                    The Ludwigstor
The museum in the former western city gate is well worth seeing and houses extensive collections and a large number of exhibits on the history of the town and fortress of Germersheim as well as the history of the region.

The museum is closed until further notice due to renovation work.

The ceremonial laying of the foundation stone for the Germersheim Fortress, built during the term of King Ludwig I, took place on October 18, 1834. The Germersheim Fortress was built largely from red bricks. The statue of the king, opposite the statue by the architect Friedrich Ritter von Schmauß, at the so-called Ludwig Gate indicates that Ludwig I commissioned the construction. The main areas of the fortress were completed in 1855, and construction was completed in 1861. The main purpose of the fortress was to defend against neighboring France. Germersheim, located on the left bank of the Rhine and directly on the Rhine, was strategically extremely advantageous for this as reclaimed Bavarian territory. The Germersheim Fortress also played an important role in the revolutionary years of 1848/1849, as it served as a refuge for the district government. The Palatinate People's Militia tried in vain to persuade the fortress soldiers to take part in the uprising.

The Ludwigstor in Germersheim is listed in the information register of cultural monuments in the district of Germersheim (June 2023). The entry reads:
                        "Ludwigsring 2
Ludwigstor, 1838, Arch. Friedrich v. Gärtner, in the north-eastern section of the Fronte Carl with an armory in front and a redoubt"

The Ludwig Gate is a very well-preserved gate of the Germersheim Fortress. The royal Bavarian fortress in the Palatinate town of Germersheim was built between 1834 and 1861.
