The Brandenburg Castle ruins tower impressively above the Werra Valley. We saw them several times from the Werra Castle Trail and eventually visited them. The view from up here is magnificent!

History In 1223, Landgrave Ludwig IV had the stone bridge built to replace a wooden bridge. The structure was secured by a defensive tower at the eastern bridgehead. The bridge is said to have been connected to the "Eisenach Gate" of the Creuzburg city wall, 200 m away. A short time later, a wooden chapel dedicated to the patron saint Liborius was built downstream on the eastern bank, which was replaced in 1499 by a Liborius Chapel built in the late Gothic style. The bridge tower was demolished in 1717. From 1747 to 1752, extensive repair and renovation work was carried out under the direction of Gottfried Heinrich Krohne to repair the flood damage. At the beginning of the 20th century, the structure was part of Reichsstraße 7. On April 1, 1945, two arches of the bridge were blown up by the Wehrmacht; reconstruction lasted until 1952.

The castle on the Tannenberg was built by the von Baumbach family in the 14th century in a strategically important location - first between Franconia and Saxony, then between Hesse and Thuringia - with the support of the Landgrave of Hesse in place of an older castle complex. The castle benefited from its location on the various trade routes, especially the Via Regia. A large part of the old core castle and the old farm yard are still preserved today. After excavations, the western kennel wall and the gate tower were reconstructed in 2006/7. The castle is now owned by the “Freunde des Tannenbergs e.V.” association. The former medieval group "Allerley" looks after the Tannenburg gastronomically, through demonstrations of old crafts and through a variety of events in the style of a living medieval museum.
