The castle was built at the beginning of the 12th century on Celtic fortifications. It was first mentioned in 1195, when the then lord of the castle granted it as a fief to the Archbishop of Trier. The castle is visible from afar.

The ruins of the Lower Castle are worth a visit. From up here, you have a magnificent view of the Moselle Valley. However, you should be in good shape, as there is quite a bit of uphill walking. The path continues via a Stations of the Cross to the Upper Castle and St. Matthias Chapel.
