Taking the Reitsteig trail ascent is preferable in sunny weather, as it runs mostly through shady forest. The Dopplersteig trail is more exposed to the sun and is ideal for an afternoon descent.

High above Salzburg towers the Untersberg – a mountain full of stories and mysterious places. Legends tell of dwarves, emperors, and hidden caves. Those who set out on the trail will encounter tranquil forests, rugged cliffs, and sweeping vistas. Well-marked trails lead to alpine pastures and peaks. Those who wish can take the Untersbergbahn cable car to the Geiereck. The return journey? Whichever way you prefer – downhill through nature or via other routes back to the valley.

As a family with two teenagers, it took us 6 hours to make the descent. The signs said 2 1/4 hours. I'm in good shape, but it was very strenuous and you definitely need to be fairly sure-footed and not afraid of heights.
