9월 7, 2024, Smearsett Scar Trig Point
A great view of Smearsett Scar from the trig point. The climb is a lot more intimidating from ground level than it actually is.

Fountains Fell at 668 metres is a UK designated Nuttall, sitting in between its two neighbours, Darnbrook Fell at 624 metres, and Fountains Fell South Top at 662 metres. The summit of Fountains Fell is marked by a large stone cairn. There are nice views over towards Pen y Ghent, and the surrounding dales.

Take this route and follow on to the tops where you can admire Gordale Scar from high level. Usually quiet as most people just go up/down to Malham Cove

It's a wonderful place, Smearsett Scar. There are terrific views of upper Ribblesdale from up here, with Fountains Fell beyond, but most of all, I would say, the phenomenal silhouette of Pen-y-ghent.

This hill is easily accessible from Malham, but feels a million miles away. Once up here you can walk for miles on moorland paths without seeing another person while looking down on the fields full of cars in Malham. Weets can also easily be combined with some of the big sights in Malham such as Gordale Scar and Janet's Foss for a walk of two halves.

Follow the faint boggy path from the Pennine Way to get to the true summit of Fountains Fell

The true summit of Fountains Fell at 668 m. Many people just tick the high point of the Pennine Way where it crosses the col, a few meters lower to the north-east. If you're running from Malham there is a great loop down the ridge from here but stay on the paths as there are a lot of sinkholes.

Lying a few hundred meters south of the Pennine Way trail, the true summit of Fountains Fell is at 668m. There are great views south across Malham or northwest towards Pen-y-Ghent. Watch out for the sinkholes left over from mining in this area; it's advised that you stick to the paths.

Heading from the ascent and summit you’ll soon find yourself in the middle of more fields that look seemingly untouched, save for the traditional dry-stone walls. Reaching the signpost, follow the route to Sheriff Hill, and then onto Shorkley Hill where you’ll momentarily join Malham Rakes Road.
