One of the three Catholic churches in the town center of Ehingen is the Konviktskirche (also known as the Sacred Heart Church). In 1686, the Benedictine Zwiefalten Monastery and the town of Ehingen agreed to establish a grammar school. It was stipulated that the monastery would provide three professors, and the town would provide the premises. A large college building was built between 1698 and 1709 based on designs by the Vorarlberg architect Franz Beer. In 1719, the associated Baroque college church, also designed by Beer, was completed and consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This made it one of the first Sacred Heart churches in Germany and worldwide. Like other ecclesiastical institutions, the college church fell victim to secularization in 1802. The building was used as a "fruit hall," i.e., for storing food. At the request of the Gymnasium to use the church for the Gymnasium service, the building was handed over to its intended purpose as a "Konviktskirche" on May 1, 1841, after a makeshift restoration.
