As a replacement for the bridge located a little further downstream until the new Adenauer Bridge (an eight-lane road bridge) is completed. It is the only way to cross the Danube at river level from the Danube Valley.

The Unterer Kuhberg Fort was built between 1846 and 1858 between Illerstrasse (B-311) and Römerstrasse to block the Kuhberg and to provide security towards the Danube. It was manned by a maximum of 1270 men. The dry trenches of the half lunette are flanked by a double and a half caponier at the front and by a tower-like caponier in the throat. Only a small number of hollow traverses were built on the ramparts around 1880 to adapt to the requirements of the fortress artillery. The arched redoubt served as a defensive barracks for the Ulm foot artillery battalion. Numerous barracks and outbuildings were built inside the structure over time. The fort was used as accommodation by various military departments until 1945. During bombing raids in World War II, the fort, which was partly designated as an air raid shelter, was hit by several explosive bombs, some of the damage is still visible today (breach in the left front wall). In the post-war period, the complex was used as emergency accommodation and as the location of many small businesses. This period also saw the greatest destruction of the complex, such as window openings being broken out, the trenches being filled with rubbish and rubble, the roofs of the walls being torn down and the maintenance of the walls being neglected. The first steps to restore/secure the structure were taken by the city of Ulm and the federal government in the 1980s. After the Bundeswehr left the complex in the 1990s, the historic barracks buildings were used by the Ulm Waldorf School and were partly unsightly built up or neglected.
