Hurworth Burn Reservoir is a 21 acre lake built in 1867. It's surrounded by woodland and attracts a rich variety of wildlife.

Absolutely huge cathedral. The interior is quite special in its plainness - not even the high ceiling is decorated making the gothic architecture even more impressive. As you cannot walk around it takes a bit of going back and forth to take in this building complex from all perspectives.

Approaching Durham from the direction of Sherburn you can pick up this bike path that passes through Old Durham. This route takes you down to the river Wear with fantastic views of the Cathedral from a different angle. A great place to take a short break and watch the many university rowing crews doing their thing along the river. The path is well used by pedestrians and dog walkers so just be considerate and you shouldn't have a problem.

Love this route from Stockton right up the castle Eden walkway to Wingate return. Reasonably flat...have to be mindful of dog walkers .

Durham Cathedral is a remarkable and spectacular building at the heart of this historic and ancient city. Along with nearby Durham Castle, it is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was constructed in the Romanesque style between 1093 and 1133 as a monastic cathedral and was home to the shrine of St Cuthbert. It was hugely influential in architectural terms. At the time of its construction, its large scale, stone vaulted ceiling was an impressive and pioneering feat, forming the blueprint for European architecture from that point onwards. Today, as well as being regarded as one of the world's greatest cathedrals, it is still a functioning establishment, welcoming thousands of services every year. Along with its neighbouring castle, it attracts scores of visitors to the city.

Good traffic free road into Durham, good views

Lookout for the matchstick man holding the railings up, near the rattling bridge. Hard to find, just like the photo I got of it, that I cant find.

Nice smooth quiet road through the fields to Durham.

Nice little cafe within a, no longer used, railway station.
