The Gateshead Millennium Bridge is an innovative tilting bridge for pedestrians and cyclists that has been connecting the Quaysides of Gateshead and Newcastle upon Tyne over the River Tyne since 2001. Designed by WilkinsonEyre and Gifford, it is the first bridge in the world to fully tilt to allow shipping passage, earning it the nickname "Blinking Eye Bridge." The bridge rotates to a 40° angle in just 4.5 minutes, allowing vessels up to 25 meters high to pass. At 126 meters long and weighing 850 tons, it is an engineering feat that forms part of the area's urban redevelopment and is an internationally acclaimed icon of modern British bridge building.

Arbeia was a Roman fort in South Shields, England, built around 160 AD as a supply base for Hadrian's Wall. Its coastal location allowed it to serve as a storage depot, with up to 22 granaries during Emperor Septimius Severus' campaign. It housed various units, including Gallic soldiers and Syrian boatmen, and may have derived its name from "place of the Arabs." The fort remained in use until the 5th century, underwent renovations, and today displays reconstructed sections that provide insight into the lives of Roman frontier soldiers.

The Fleet sculpture at Captain's Wharf in South Shields is an artwork by Irene Brown, created in 2004. It consists of seven highly polished stainless steel collier brigs—historic sailing ships formerly used for transporting coal. These sculptures are placed in a basin that once served as a dry dock for shipbuilding and repair, thus directly referencing the location's maritime history.

The Alum Ale House: This characterful pub is located on Ferry Street, near the Tyne ferry terminal, and is one of the city's oldest pubs. The building itself is over 200 years old and has a rich history dating back to the local glass and alum industries. Today, it's a cozy real ale pub with river views, a wide selection of beers and ciders, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Its terrace makes it a popular spot for enjoying a pint overlooking the water.
