On the occasion of the town's 700th anniversary, a bronze statue of the legendary "Fischer Stüben" was unveiled to the public on April 30, 2005. Fisherman Friedrich Gottlieb Stüben has found a fitting home in Heiligenhafen, directly on the inland lake, as a life-size symbol of the history and the community's connection to fishing. But who was Fischer Stüben? Friedrich Gottlieb Stüben (born on January 24, 1838 in Nysted, Denmark) made history when, in the early morning of March 15, 1864, he and other fishermen from Heiligenhafen and Großenbrode, in a total of eight or nine boats, transported Prussian troops to the Danish-occupied island of Fehmarn. After all the ferry boats reached Fehmarn without loss, the Prussians succeeded in recapturing the occupied island of Fehmarn from the Danes in a surprise attack.
