Linking Preston to Kendal, the Lancaster Canal is one of the country's few coastal canals. Built along the natural lie of the land it offers 41 miles of lock free cruising - the longest stretch in the country. As the canal is naturally level, it also lends itself to gentle walking and cycling as well as canoeing and other outdoor activities. And we've loads of trails and routes to help you take advantage of this wellbeing resource on your doorstep.

Named the Fairy Steps because of a legend that if you ascend or descend the steps without touching the sides you are granted a wish by the fairies. Though as at parts the sides a just a foot apart at shoulder height there is not much chance of that!

Arnside Knott is a serene and scenic location that provides a peaceful escape into nature. Whether you're interested in running, hiking, or simply enjoying the stunning views, Arnside Knott is a great place to explore within the Arnside and Silverdale AONB.

The Fairy Steps are shrouded in numerous legends, with one prevalent tale suggesting that if you manage to ascend or descend the steps without making contact with the sides, the fairies will bestow upon you a wish. During the late 19th century, hordes of tourists flocked to this enchanting location, captivated by the romantic notion of having their desires fulfilled by the magical beings.

Arnside Tower was built in the second half of the 15th century. Constructed of limestone rubble, the tower was originally five storeys high, measuring 50 feet by 34 feet.

Spectacular viewpoint out to Morecambe Bay.

No views at the trig point but plenty of great views on the way up.

I cycled from Garstang towards Lancaster earlier this week. For a lot of the 7 or 8 miles I did, the vegetation was shoulder high, and leaning across the path at times. Proceed with caution.

Arnside Knott is a beautiful area with loads of different paths and trails up to and around it. Lovely circular route along the coast between Arnside & Silverdale but just check the tides before starting as part of it is inaccessible at high tides and part of it needed a bit of scrambling so not suitable for all. We saw a Red Kite hovering above us as we sat on the Knott eating our lunch.

View of the remains of Arnside Tower. Which sits in between Arnside and Silverdale. One of the oldest buildings in the parish and was built to protect the community from invasions from the scots. Also known as Peel/Pele Tower.
