The port of the Hanseatic city of Buxtehude is the navigable endpoint of the Este, a tributary of the Elbe. Mills and factories once thrived there. In the Rosengarten state forest, 1750 m west of the forestry office, on a hill above a steep ridge of terrain stands the Karlstein, a mighty, medium-coarse reddish-gray granite (>1.9 x 2.5 x 2.2 m), which has been astonishing for centuries excited. It was less the size of the stone than the deep grooves and the “imprints” of horseshoes that aroused interest early on. Stones with horseshoe symbols can be found in various places.
