An interesting sculpture indeed. Since it was placed here by the river, one might assume it represents Neptune, the Roman god of flowing waters, springs, or even the weather. The fact that the Via Claudia Augusta (built at the beginning of the 1st century AD) runs along this route also suggests this conclusion. Neptune and Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, were only generally considered synonymous from the beginning of the 3rd century onwards. However, the sculpture's posture is also unusual: in antiquity, both were depicted standing upright. Perhaps the artist wanted to express, with the reclining figure, that Neptune or Poseidon should rest, no longer have any power, and keep their hands off the bridge.
