In the heart of the idyllic old town of Idstein is the King Adolf Square, which the town's residents affectionately call the "Gut Stubb" of Idstein. It was named in 1946 after the only German king from the House of Nassau, King Adolf, who was Roman-German king from 1292 to 1298. Meetings have always been called and court hearings held on this central market square. Today, the historic half-timbered houses around the square are particularly popular photo subjects for tourists. All year round, the King Adolf Square in Idstein is used for markets as well as for concerts, theater performances and other events.

The chancellery gate, which marks the dividing line between the urban area in the south and the stately district in the north, was built in 1497 as the count's chancellery during the reign of Count Philipp von Nassau-Idstein. Other uses included a guard and prison room, a torture chamber, a granary and an apartment for servants. Today the festive, spacious wedding room of the Idstein registry office is on the first floor.
