The Academia Nassauensis was founded in 1584. As a Calvinist institution, it never received university privileges. Until it closed in 1817, Germany's smallest university had trained 6,000 graduates in theology, medicine, law and philosophy. The most important student from 1611-13 was Johann Amos Comenius, one of the fathers of modern pedagogy and founder of didactics, the art of teaching. His main work bears the telling title Didactica magna. Comenius' teaching principles included learning by doing, observation before linguistic communication, mother tongue before foreign language, examples before words. Some of his principles are still used in teacher training today. Not only famous students, but also famous professors came to Herborn to study at the High School. The most important was probably its first rector, Johannes Piscator, who led the academy from 1584 until his death in 1625. The first Reformed Bible translation, which Piscator produced in 1602-04, was also produced during this period. It was the second complete Bible translation into German after the Luther Bible. As was common at universities at the time, Herborn also tried to find its own academic printer after the invention and gradual spread of the printing press. Christoph Corvin was hired for this purpose in 1585. He ran his Corvin printing works in the Paulshof, which quickly became one of the leading European publishing houses. Today, the buildings of the High School house the Herborn Municipal Museum as well as catering facilities on 700 square meters of exhibition space.

In its current state (winter 24), this path is no longer my favorite. Lots of dead wood (the path to the castle ruins is closed) and broken trees in the winter gray.

Hohensolms Castle, also known as Neu-Hohensolms, is a hilltop castle on the so-called "Ramsberg" at around 430 m above sea level. NN The castle was built around 1350 by the Counts of Solms. It replaced Alt-Hohensolms Castle, which was destroyed in 1349 by the imperial city of Wetzlar and was about 2 kilometers further south on the Altenberg. In the disputes with the imperial city of Wetzlar, Neu-Hohensolms was partially destroyed in 1356 and 1363. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Hohensolms
