Herborn Castle was built in the middle of the 13th century, around the same time as the city walls and at the same time as the town charter was granted. It was first mentioned in a document in 1307. The first residents were nobles from the surrounding villages. As "castle guards", they had been granted the rights of use by the Counts of Nassau and had the duty to exercise "protection". In order to pay for their feuds and escape other financial worries, the count families of the time used to mortgage their possessions and fiefdoms. As a result, the town and castle often changed hands. From 1425 onwards, it was owned by the Counts of Nassau-Dillenburg. During this time, the castle changed its function and appearance just as often as its owners. It was a widow's residence, an armoury and a mint. It also housed official apartments for the Herborn bailiff and, at other times, for the professors of the High School. The library of the High School was also housed here. Despite or perhaps because of its diverse use, the castle was in danger of falling apart at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1835 it was to be sold for demolition. The citizens of Herborn then organized themselves and managed to prevent the demolition. After repairs in 1840 it was used as a ducal prescription and district office. After the Duchy of Nassau fell to Prussia in 1866, the Prussian King Wilhelm I donated the castle to the Protestant Church in 1869. During the Franco-Prussian War from 1870 to 1871 it served as a military hospital, then for a few years as a teacher training college (the "preparatory institute") and in 1881 the theological seminary moved in. Since then, pastors have been continuously trained in Herborn. Since 1947, Herborn Castle has been owned by the Evangelical Church in Hesse and Nassau (EKHN), which trains its pastors here. In 1929/30, a major reconstruction took place and after renovation work in the 1970s, the castle was completely renovated and refurbished inside in 2004/2005.

In its current state (winter 24), this path is no longer my favorite. Lots of dead wood (the path to the castle ruins is closed) and broken trees in the winter gray.

Beautiful view of the castle. It's a shame that you can't see the castle itself, or at least the castle grounds. The property is used by the Protestant church for seminars for prospective pastors.

Hohensolms Castle, also known as Neu-Hohensolms, is a hilltop castle on the so-called "Ramsberg" at around 430 m above sea level. NN The castle was built around 1350 by the Counts of Solms. It replaced Alt-Hohensolms Castle, which was destroyed in 1349 by the imperial city of Wetzlar and was about 2 kilometers further south on the Altenberg. In the disputes with the imperial city of Wetzlar, Neu-Hohensolms was partially destroyed in 1356 and 1363. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burg_Hohensolms
