Veitshöchheim is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Würzburg and is located on the Main. The town is a former summer residence of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, later of the Kings of Bavaria. The palace complex with its Rococo garden is well-known. Veitshöchheim was first mentioned in 779. The parish of Veitshöchheim was donated to the monastery of St. Stephan in 1097 by the Würzburg bishop Emehard. Veitshöchheim Palace was built between 1680 and 1682 under Prince-Bishop Peter Philipp von Dernbach and expanded between 1749 and 1753 by Balthasar Neumann. The construction of the court garden, which belongs to the palace, began in 1702. The parish church of St. Vitus, which still exists today, was consecrated in 1691, and the Veitshöchheim synagogue was built between 1727 and 1730. In 1814, the town finally fell to the state of Bavaria, after only nine years earlier it had become part of the Grand Duchy of Würzburg. The municipality was formed in its current form in the course of the Bavarian administrative reforms in 1818. Veitshöchheim train station with the royal pavilion was built in 1853 and 1854 under Maximilian II of Bavaria. Source: Wikipedia

Homburg Castle For cyclists in the Main Valley, the view of the tuff rocks is always worth a photo stop with a “saddle break”. Homburg am Main Castle presents itself as a historical painter's corner that can be found with great regularity on calendars and in the relevant travel literature about Franconia. In fact: the architectural and historical landmark of the well-known wine-growing community on the eastern Mainviereck is one of the most famous monuments among the palaces and castles in Franconia. Homburg Castle has been municipally owned since 1869. The Triefenstein market as the current owner had to make a lot of efforts to save the half-timbered building from decay.

Steep approach with a great view. And on the forum with the wine queens who opened the wine hiking days.

Castle and courtyard garden a must in the capital of the Franconian carnival. And if you then pass a Bocksbeutel artist garden, you will find many beautifully implemented ideas.

Traditionally, the Homburg Wine Festival takes place here in the last two weeks of July, when the castle becomes a wine village. Don't miss it! But the castle is also beautiful to look at.

The castle, which was probably built in the 13th century, is the landmark of the Oberberg district. The half-timbered construction immediately catches the eye. Even marriages are possible here.

From here you not only have a wonderful view of the Main Bridge, but also over Würzburg

If you walk across the Main Bridge, you will pass a total of 12 bridge figures. These figures are Frankish apostles, Würzburg bishops, saints as patron saints, Charlemagne and his father Pippin. Today there are mostly replicas that have a size of 4.5 meters. The figures on the south side (up the Main): Holy Totnan – Apostle of the Franks Saint Kilian – Apostle of the Franks Patrona Franconia – Holy Virgin Mary Colonate – Apostle of the Franks Holy Burkard – First Bishop of Würzburg Saint Bruno – Bishop of Würzburg and builder of the Würzburg Cathedral

Imposing fortress above Würzburg. 🙂 In the early 8th century, Marienberg, which has been inhabited since the late Bronze Age, was probably home to a fort of the Franconian-Thuringian dukes with a church, which was raised in 741 to become the first Würzburg bishop's church. From 1200 an unusually large castle was built, which was expanded and expanded in the late Middle Ages and Renaissance. The storming of the castle by the Swedes in 1631 in the Thirty Years' War prompted Johann Philipp von Schönborn to surround the Marienberg with a ring of mighty bastions, which significantly characterize the appearance of the castle. In 1945 the fortress burned down almost completely, and reconstruction lasted until 1990. The Marienkirche, whose origins go back to the year 706 AD, the 40 m high keep and the well house with the over 100 m deep cistern are impressive testimonies to the more than 1000-year history of the Marienberg Fortress. The 1,300 square meter princely garden, which was restored in 1937/38 according to plans from the early 18th century, is accessible from the castle courtyard.
