The Protestant Church of St. Martin in Vollerwiek is one of the six churches on the Eiderstedt peninsula that celebrated their 900th anniversary in 2013. Yet St. Martin is unique compared to the other five old churches: St. Martin has already been extensively renovated and restored—most recently from 2010 to 2012.

A so-called steel lattice mast, which, due to its height, requires additional cables to support it. The tower still serves its purpose by broadcasting radio (DAB) and providing coverage for the Monik radio networks. A very nice landmark.

The salt marshes of St. Peter-Ording are a natural transition between land and sea. On one side is the mudflats, on the other side the dike and in between the salt marshes. The salt marshes of St. Peter-Ording are flooded by the sea, which is why a fluctuating and at times very high salt content only allows certain animals and plants to live. The closer the salt marshes are to the Wadden Sea, the more barren the landscape is and the fewer living creatures find a home there. Too often this zone is flooded for several hours, so that only two flowering plants can settle there.
