🏰⛏️ Ascheberg Castle The actual walls of the hilltop castle, which was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Ascheberg, no longer exist. What is still recognizable today is an impressive, two-part rampart system measuring approximately 160 x 100 meters with deep ditches. The castle was probably built in the 10th century during the Carolingian era. It experienced a major turning point around 1164/1179 when it was destroyed and razed in a feud with the Lords of Steinfurt.

🏰⛏️ Ascheberg Castle near Steinfurt-Burgsteinfurt is a fascinating example of a vanished medieval structure, where today mainly the foundations and earthworks are visible. It is a so-called castle mound (former castle site), which is protected as an archaeological monument.

A beautiful approach to the castle. However, the walk along the moat is also worthwhile, as is a tour around the moated castle. The 15th-century castle consists of an outer and a main castle on two islands. Thanks to the different architectural periods, elements of Classicism (Rentei), Neo-Gothic (chapel), and Renaissance (stepped gable) can be found here. Since its purchase in 1786, the castle has been privately owned by the Heereman von Zuydtwyck family from Roermond, and is still inhabited today by Philipp Freiherr Heereman von Zuydtwyck. Conclusion: Even though the castle is privately owned, a visit and tour of the complex is worthwhile. Tours of the public parts of the castle are also available upon reservation.

In spring/summer, none of the ruins are visible due to the dense foliage of the trees.
