The Cistercian monastery of Marienfeld, founded in 1185, was one of the most important monasteries in Westphalia. The late Romanesque abbey church is an outstanding example of Cistercian architecture. The Cistercian Trail, a 1200-meter-long circular walk, leads around the monastery grounds. The monastery café and the monastery parlor provide a great range of culinary options on site.

It was founded in 1185 by monks from the Hardehausen Monastery. The abbey church was consecrated in 1222. After the Reich Deputation Main Conclusion, the monastery was dissolved in 1803 and became state property. The church is now owned by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and is used as a parish church according to a foundation from 1804. Some of the farm buildings are also state property and serve as apartments for the priest, sexton and organist. Other buildings are privately owned and are used as apartments or for a hotel business. The former retreat buildings fell into disrepair and were eventually demolished. Since Pentecost 2004, two Benedictines lived in the community to rebuild monastic life, but one of them died in the summer of 2014 and the other left the community in 2021.

They will be completely renewed.
