In southern Germany, Switzerland, and Flanders, the term "Wette" (Wett, Weed, or Flemish Wedde), first documented in the Franconian and shortly thereafter in the Alemannic language area, is known. This word originally referred to a horse watering place. It is derived from *wetten*, meaning 'to drive animals into the watering place,' which in turn is derived from *waten* (thus literally meaning 'to make someone or something wade'). Wurzach Castle (1723-1728) in the city center boasts one of the most beautiful Baroque staircases in southern Germany. It is considered a jewel on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route. The elegantly curved staircase cleverly ascends a considerable height to the ceiling fresco, depicting an ancient heaven of the gods. The impressive painting centers on the legend of Hercules. Commissioned by the House of Waldburg-Zeil-Wurzach, it was likely significantly influenced by Italian artists. The castle courtyard is flanked by two guardhouses, the "Hohes Haus" (High House) to the west and the "Rentamt" (Tax Office), built in 1691, to the east. This wing also houses the old castle chapel, first mentioned in 1422. To the left in the choir is the tomb of George I of Waldburg, "Jörg with the pretty hair," who died in 1467. In the climbing park of Bad Waldsee, young and old alike can find the right thrill at dizzying heights – however, this is not for everyone, and watching it can make you feel a little uneasy.

A pillar in the mayor's office bears the carved stone inscription: "In the year 1426, the house was built, and Ulrich Kudrer was mayor and master builder." At that time, the town had around 500 inhabitants, severely humiliated people who were "dishonorable, disloyal, perjured, without rights, and convicted" if they rebelled against the harsh dictates of the Waldburg lordship. The town hall was a reaction to this oppression. It had to be large enough to coexist with the castle and the monastery. And since Ulrich Kudrer was not only a good mayor but also a brilliant planner, he succeeded in translating the citizens' needs into architecture.
