Schweizergarten, Vienna In 1904, the Vienna City Gardens created the Maria Josefa Park on former storage sites between the former South Station and Arsenal. In 1919 - after the end of the First World War - this area was renamed Schweizergarten on the occasion of the Swiss relief efforts. In 1965, the Schweizergarten was expanded to its current size as part of the construction of the Floridsdorf-Meidling high-speed railway main line, which runs beneath the park. Large ponds with rocky sections and fountains, an alpine plant garden and numerous exotic trees characterize the Schweizergarten. The most striking monument in the park, the "silver-metallic column", was created by the Viennese artist Heinrich Deutsch. It commemorates the founding of the Second Republic in 1945.
