The unregulated course of the Lafnitz River, especially downstream from the Stögersbach confluence, represents a unique biotope in Central Europe. With its approximately 40 meanders, this section is the most intricately structured part of the entire river course, offering a multitude of habitats for both flora and fauna. The undisturbed flow dynamics are enhanced by heavy summer rainfall, which frequently leads to flooding. These floods promote the pronounced erosion of the banks, a phenomenon known in ecology as cut and point banks. An important aspect of this nature reserve is the breeding population of typical river bird species such as the little ringed plover (Charadrius dubius), the common sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos), and the common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis), which depend on these specially shaped banks. In addition, the extensive unregulated sections of the Lafnitz, together with the Raab River, provide habitat for the endangered European otter (Lutra lutra). This species, which in Austria is mainly found in the waters of the Mühlviertel and Waldviertel regions as well as on the lower reaches of the Raab, Lafnitz and Feistritz rivers, benefits from an intact and diverse aquatic landscape, which is essential for its reproduction and foraging.

A really ancient tree. Many branches are overgrown with moss, the trunk has an unusually thick bark. The huge roots are not entirely harmless. Unfortunately, I could not sense any of the strong power of this oak tree, apart from a mystical flair, although I am usually very receptive to such things.

Beautifully designed main square. Often decorated according to themes and/or seasons. A detour here is worth it. And if there's nothing worth mentioning here, then at least the Marian column, the fountain, the benches and the cafes around it.

even if you might think you are at a modern bus stop, this is a rest area. It offers shade when it's hot and a roof when it rains.

Column standing on a square base on the main square, marked 1750, with a gilded figure of the Virgin Mary from the Veit Königer workshop. The Marian column is made of sandstone and is approx. 11 m high. The year 1778 on the column is a reminder of the terrible storm and hailstorm in July of this year, which not only totally destroyed all crops, but also more or less damaged almost all buildings. During this storm, the Marian column was knocked over and smashed. The northern tower of the palace also fell victim.

The pilgrimage church of Maria Gnadenbrunn in Burgau is dedicated to the Mother of God and celebrates her patron saint on September 8, the feast of the Nativity of Mary. The year the church was founded is unknown; however, it is known that the Gothic building was destroyed by the Hungarians in 1418. Today's sanctuary was rebuilt at the end of the 15th century. In 1617 the parish chronicle mentions: "Under the sacristy (today the baptistery) on the north side flows a living spring." This is where the name Gnadenbrunn comes from. Unfortunately, the source may have dried up at some point.

Burgau's main square, which is always beautifully designed, offers not only rest and relaxation on comfortable benches, but also one or the other sight. The Marian column on the main square was built by Count Batthány in 1775. As early as 1778 it was damaged by a severe storm and then renovated. The statue of Mary looks to the east; the direction from which the plague came. Right next to the column is a mighty oak tree and a fountain underneath. There is also an e-bike charging station! When I walked past here, it was already decorated for Christmas at the beginning of November.

The beautiful church in Burgau, the year of its foundation is unknown, was first mentioned in a document in 1418. Further information can be found at: https://thermenland.graz-seckau.at/pfarre/93989/pfarren/burgau/ueberdiepfarre Next to the church there is also a nice place to rest and other buildings and crosses to look at. About 100 steps lead up to the church. Your own challenge;)

The 1000-year-old oak is located in Bad Blumau in the Bierbaum district and is considered the oldest oak in Europe. The tree impresses with a height of 30 meters and a trunk diameter of 2.50 meters. The crown diameter is even 50 meters. Seven adults are required to comprise the tribe. You can relax in your shade or reflect on the many, sometimes stormy, eras that this magnificent tree has already survived. In the 1970s, the oak was so badly damaged by lightning that it began to rot. In 1989 it was revitalized by tree surgeon Manfred Saller and thus saved from decay. The tree has now survived 50 generations!
