As early as Roman times, an important long-distance connection from Strasbourg to Constance ran through the city area and continued to operate under Frankish rule. The Hornberg rule was given as a fief to Adalbert von Ellerbach by Henry IV around 1084, who from then on called himself von Hornberg. Around 1200 there was a division among the heirs, and the southern part became the Triberg estate. The castle, beneath which the later town of Hornberg developed, was built at this time. The city was sold into the hands of the Württembergers, for whom this area represented an important base on the way to their Alsatian possessions and the county of Mömpelgard. Sales began in 1423 and were completed about two decades later. In the middle of the 15th century the city became the seat of a bailiff's office. In the border agreement between the Kingdom of Würtemberg and the Grand Duchy of Baden,[3] which was concluded in Paris on October 2, 1810, several “staffs” of the Hornberg Oberamt, including Hornberg, the town of Schiltach and the municipalities of Gutach and Kirnbach, came to the Grand Duchy Bathe. The term Hornberg Castle (also Neu-Hornberg Castle) describes the castle and palace buildings that have been built on the Schlossberg in the town of Hornberg since around 1200, of which only the keep and the powder tower as well as the remains of the wall remain today. The castle is located in the Ortenaukreis in Baden-Württemberg. The ruins are located about 100 meters above the old town of Hornberg at an altitude of 455 meters on a flat mountain ledge between Gutachtal and Offenbachtal. The site extends about 150 meters from southeast to northwest. The castle was protected from three sides by steep rocky slopes and offered good visibility and thus control over the valleys of Gutach, Reichenbach/Schwanenbach and Offenbach. Visiting the castle when in Hornberg is an absolute must. The view from the tower is phenomenal. Hornberg with the train station and the viaduct lies at your feet like on a railway system.

Great castle. Finally more than the remains of a stone wall. And the ascents and descents do what is essential. Then I descended along the climbing rocks myself. This is really alpine and therefore I cannot recommend it to everyone. Adventure.

The Falkenstein castle ruins are divided into Upper and Lower Falkenstein. To the lower ruin it goes through it directly at the upper ruin. One does not believe that there is still a way to go. But; You can still go on over beautiful stone stairs😉🥾
