Until the death penalty was abolished in Upper Austria in 1786, the "Carnificies Trimontani", the executioners of Triberg, are known to have executed over a dozen witches and warlocks on the Schelmenrain. One document even speaks of more than 100 witch trials. The last execution of a Triberg executioner, however, did not take place until 1790 in the Fürstenberg district of Wolfach, where the Triberg executioner Steinmayer carried out his bloody duties with the executioner's sword.
