Little clever shit about the superlatives from what I've read: Burghausen Castle is the longest castle in Germany and even the world. After Ehrenbreitstein, Rheinfels is the largest castle/fortress on the Middle Rhine

Stahleck Castle is a hilltop castle in the Middle Rhine Valley in the area of the town of Bacharach in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Mainz-Bingen, almost 50 kilometers south of Koblenz. Its water-filled ditch is a rarity in Germany.

Rheinfels Castle is the largest surviving castle ruin on the Rhine. Although time has left its mark on the walls, you can still imagine what the magnificent fortress must have looked like. Part of the castle is now a museum where you can learn about the interesting history of the place. You can find information about the opening times here: https://www.stadt-st-goar.de/urlaub-in-st-goar/#rheinfels.

Everything has already been written about the castle. Unfortunately it is privately owned and cannot be visited. But a very nice view below the ruins.

he Rheinfels castle ruins are located on a rocky hill at a height of 115 meters above the Gündelbach valley and the town of St. Goar. After it was built by the Counts of Katzenelnbogen in 1245, it initially served as a customs castle. Due to its stable construction, it was able to withstand any siege and attack attempts for centuries. After the family of counts died out, the castle was taken over by the landgraves of Hesse-Kassel in the 15th century and expanded to become the largest and most well-fortified fortress in the Middle Rhine Valley. At this time it experienced its historical peak as a cultural center. After being blown up by the French revolutionary army in the late 18th century, Rheinfels Castle fell into ruins and was only used as a quarry. The purchase of the Prince of Prussia in 1818 prevented the ruins from completely falling apart, so that about a third of the walls were preserved. The ruins of Nollig stand high above the city on the hill of the same name. This defense tower was built around 1300 as part of the city fortifications to secure the city down the Rhine. Investigations have shown that the tower was first erected as a three-storey half-timbered building, the foundation of which sat directly on the slate rock. To the north, the half-timbered building carried a battlement also made of wooden beams. Later, the tower was encased in a massive rubble stone wall and expanded with two rounded towers on either side of the wooden parapet walkway. In the western tower is the spiral staircase leading to the tower. The city wall was originally supposed to reach up to the defense tower, but this was never implemented due to the smooth slate floor. However, the original size of the city wall can still be seen at the intended connection point at the tower: it was approx. 6 m wide and approx. 1.30 m thick. Today the tower is privately owned and cannot be visited. An exception was Heritage Day 2007, when the public was allowed access to the tower. Many guests and locals took the rare opportunity to hike up the Nollig to take a look at the old fortified tower. The Nollig ruins can only be reached on foot via the Rheinsteig or the Rheinburgenweg. There is no access by car. https://www.lorch-rhein.de/staticsite/staticsite.php?menuid=57&topmenu=41

The name of the castle is made up of the Middle High German words stahel for steel and corner as a designation for a mountain spur and means impregnable castle on a mountain spur. [1] It was probably built at the end of the 11th or beginning of the 12th century and was a fiefdom of the Electorate of Cologne. [2] [3] Since Bacharach had become a trading and stacking place for the Palatinate-Rheingau wine trade under the Count Palatinate near Rhine, [4] the facility also functioned as a customs castle. From the beginning of the 13th century Stahleck was owned by Wittelsbach and remained there until the beginning of the 19th century, although it was besieged and conquered by various parties eight times during the Thirty Years' War. Badly damaged by explosions in 1689, Stahleck was in ruins after the end of the Palatinate Electoral State and property of the French state, which had to cede it to the Kingdom of Prussia in accordance with the provisions of the Congress of Vienna in 1815. The Rhenish Association for Monument Preservation and Heritage Protection, which was then based in Koblenz, acquired the castle complex in 1909 from the Prussian domain administration and had it rebuilt as a youth hostel from 1925. The expansion during the 1920s and 1930s served as a role model throughout Germany. [4] However, the castle was not fully restored until 1967 when work on the keep was completed. The youth hostel operation continues to this day, so interior tours are not possible. The large viewing terrace offers a good view of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley there, as part of which the complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. Because of its importance as a particularly valuable historical building, Stahleck Castle has also been under protection under the Hague Convention since 1989. Source: Wikipedia
