Very beautiful building with statues in front. The café in the kitchen building is right next door.

Parts of the palace, the stair tower and the surrounding wall can still be seen on the ruins. The castle can always be viewed from the outside. In summer, the trees obscure the view a little, but this does not detract from the romantic and fairytale atmosphere of the castle. You can easily walk around the almost triangular plateau on which the castle stands. This offers a wonderful view of the Elster Valley. A beautiful spot, an enchanted castle ruin. On Heritage Day you can also climb the tower, then it is open. We were lucky enough to do so once. It's worth it. Great view.

The first documented mention of the name Greiz appears in a document from the year 1209, in which castle guards of Greiz are listed.

The Lower Castle is a closed ensemble of 19th century residential architecture. Today, the Lower Castle houses the museum, the textile workshop, the Greiz Information Centre, the music school and a café.

The Summer Palace combines three collection focal points under one roof. The art treasures of the Greiz Princely House, which were transferred to the Free State of Thuringia as part of a settlement in 1921 as the “Foundation of the Elder Line of the House of Reuss”, have been accessible to the public since 1922. This includes, on the one hand, the court library and, on the other hand, the copper engraving collection. Starting from a considerable collection of historical caricatures, the “Greizer SATIRICUM” was founded in 1975 and thus a planned collection of contemporary caricatures on a museum level.
