Heidenburg Castle once stood on a ridge at the mouth of the Mußbach stream where it flows into the Rhine plain. Nothing is known about the castle today. It is believed to date back to the 9th century and, based on its name, to have belonged to a non-Christian group. A plateau remains of the castle, now traversed by a hiking trail, and a stone bearing the castle's name marks its location. The outline of a ring wall or rampart is still roughly discernible. Source: https://burgenarchiv.de/ The Ritterstein (Knight's Stone) can be found by standing on the path in front of the castle ruins with your back to Gimmeldingen. Then, walk a few steps along the left side, which is at a 90° angle to the path.

The "Old Castle" - a popular destination You can see nearby Gimmeldingen with its Laurentius Church (whose tower was built almost at the same time as the castle!), see the edge of the Haardt with the vineyards, the Haardt Castle, Neustadt, the Hohe Loog, the Hambach Castle and the Rhine plain. Can you really see the church towers of Neustadt and all the districts from here, as is claimed? That was not possible for a long time because of the tall bushes all around. But then the rural youth of Mußbach-Gimmeldingen started to clear the castle grounds of wild growth and transform it into a beautiful complex. And in 2012 they invited people to a castle festival here with drinks and music and a wonderful view. The visitors were so enthusiastic that they like to come back every year to the festival at the "Old Castle". Reinhard Kermann

Demolition and partial reconstruction of a Salian residential tower The Salian tower castle in Gimmeldingen, which was once 15 to 20 m high and had four to five floors, was almost completely demolished over the centuries because the bricks could be put to good use. But suddenly the "old castle" came to light again! Between 1969 and 1972, the Gimmeldingen pastor Theophil Blitt rebuilt parts of the castle on the old foundations with young people from all over the world. However, the interior was later filled with earth, so that today visitors can stand on a flat surface and enjoy the wonderful view behind a low wall.

Excavations on the Kieselberg Similar to how Hambach Castle stands on a mountain between the edge of the Haardt and the Rhine plain, we also find our "Old Castle" on a hill in front of it, from which you have a wonderful panoramic view. This location is an ideal prerequisite for a tower or a castle. And so foundations made of cleanly fitted sandstone blocks were actually found here. Since the remains of a Roman Mithras temple were found in Gimmeldingen, it was assumed for a while that a Roman watchtower once stood up here. But several excavations, most recently in 1992, have clearly shown that a medieval castle complex from the Salian period (1024-1125) with a defensive wall and a moat in front of it stood here. A similar castle, although much better preserved, is the Schlößl ruins near Klingenmünster.
