Hambach Castle is nice to look at on its hill, but that's not the main thing. Walking there “up, up to the castle” and being at the birthplace of German democracy, breathing in the breath of this place and then also visiting the very nice and helpful exhibition is a must for anyone who likes history and democracy. The staff are happy to explain everything about the historical background, and the exhibits are very informative.

Not worth visiting for a hike, one should stay longer and enjoy the place. Up, up to the castle and at the latest on the way home, eating and drinking - just like back then.

Absolute highlight in the region. Due to the historical importance of the Hambach Festival this castle is maintained like no other. From that point of view, it makes an extremely neat impression - one might even think that it is a new building made of "old" .... Inside there is a restaurant and an interesting museum.

Apart from the touch of history, the castle offers a wonderful view of the surrounding area. Very nice, definitely worth a detour. Gastronomy is not neglected. You can also enjoy the surroundings with a piece of cake and a cup of coffee on the terrace of the cafeteria.

The Hambach Castle is worth a visit. The original site was from the 11th century and belonged to the property of the Salier. Because it was built at a strategically favorable location on the Hambach Schlossberg, it dominated both as a protection as well as Raubritterburg the crossing at Neustadt trade routes.

Hambach Castle near the urban district Hambach of Neustadt an der Weinstraße in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is considered the symbol of the German democracy movement because of the Hambacher Fest which occurred here in 1832, when the then ruined castle was the focal point of the discontent of the Palatinate people over the repressive measures of the Bavarian administration which had been in office since 1816. The administration had retracted important rights which had been given to the people by French Revolution troops (governing 1797-1815).
Archaeological finds prove that the area of Hambach Castle was used in late Roman times. During the late Carolingian Dynasty and Ottonian dynasty a castle of refuge was built there. Portions remain in front of and under the outer ring wall. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hambach_Castle

At 6 p.m. the gate is closed and you can only see the castle from a distance - just for information. But at least a small viewing platform in front of the gate still guarantees the grandiose view of the Rhine plain.
