On June 1, 1642, during the Thirty Years' War, the priest of Kevelaer consecrated a wayside shrine at the crossroads of the old trade routes Amsterdam-Cologne and Münster-Brussels and installed a copper engraving of the Mother of God Mary "Consolatrix Afflictorum" (Comforter of the Sorrowful) from Luxembourg. The wayside shrine and copper engraving were donated by the dealer Hendrick Busmann and his wife Mechel. In the background of the picture you can see details of the city of Luxembourg, in whose cathedral there is the miraculous image "Our Lady of Luxembourg". This is how the history of the pilgrimage in Kevelaer begins in 1642. This is where the Chapel of Grace stands today.
