Büdingen is a medium-sized town in Hesse on the eastern edge of the Rhine-Main region, in the southeastern part of the Wetterau district. Until 1972 it was the district seat of the district of the same name. Büdingen is located in a wooded area on the Seemenbach, at the transition from the Wetterau to the Vogelsberg. The city is known nationally for its medieval old town with castle, which is one of the best-preserved urban complexes in Europe. With an area of around 123 km², Büdingen is the largest city in the district and one of the largest in Hesse.

The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1219. The first castle complex was probably destroyed around 1241 when the archbishops of Cologne and Mainz moved against the Hohenstaufen possessions in the Wetterau and also destroyed the castles in Lindheim and Ortenberg. The castle was soon renovated. When the Büdinger family died out after 1240, the castle and rule initially passed proportionately to the Lords of Breuberg and the Lords of Isenburg. When the Breubergers died out in 1323, the Isenburgers came into sole possession of the castle. A brisk building activity can be observed in the 15th and 16th centuries, not least because from 1511 to 1565 several Isenburg lines lived in the castle before moving into their own residences (Georg von Isenburg-Ronneburg, for example, had the Oberhof Büdingen built between 1569 and 1574). . In 1601, Wolfgang Ernst von Isenburg reunited the castle parts in one hand. The facility still belongs to the von Isenburg-Büdingen family today.
