A magnificent 🏰, looming over the vineyards of the town of Alken 🤩. Wonderfully accessible via the Moselsteig trail or the Traumpfade trail 😊.

Ehrenburg Castle stands in a prominent location—strategically advantageous in medieval times. Unlike many other buildings of that era, it remains in use to this day. Parts of the complex serve as a restaurant and hotel.

Little clever shit about the superlatives from what I've read: Burghausen Castle is the longest castle in Germany and even the world. After Ehrenbreitstein, Rheinfels is the largest castle/fortress on the Middle Rhine

The Ehrenburg was first mentioned in 1161. At that time, the German Emperor Friedrich I Barbarossa settled a dispute between the Archbishop of Trier and the Count Palatine near the Rhine. Exactly 170 years later, in 1331, a conflict broke out between the Archbishop of Trier and the counts on the Moselle. During the so-called “Eltz Feud,” the houses of Eltz, Ehrenberg, Schöneck and Waldeck formed an alliance against Baldwin of Trier. He archbishop ultimately won the argument. With the “Eltzer Atonement”, a peace treaty was concluded and Count Palatine Rudolf received the Ehrenburg as a fiefdom. During the War of the Palatinate Succession, French troops blew up some parts of the Ehrenburg complex in 1689. The ruins changed hands several times in the following centuries until they became private property in 1991. A year later, restoration work began and is now largely completed. Rheinfels Castle is the largest surviving castle ruin on the Rhine. Although time has left its mark on the walls, you can still imagine what the magnificent fortress must have looked like. Part of the castle is now a museum where you can learn about the interesting history of the place. You can find information about the opening times here: https://www.stadt-st-goar.de/urlaub-in-st-goar/#rheinfels.
