Beautiful viewpoint from the hiking trail around the crater lake of the deep blue lake and the volcanic caldera.

It felt like 100 smaller and larger waterfalls all along the gorge! Simply a great natural spectacle 👍

Also called the "Blue Eye" of the Hegau. Unlike other volcanic relics and maars in the Swabian Alb, the "Höwenegg" is part of the Hegau volcanism. The main crater is the largest of a total of six eruption sites from which basalt and basalt tuff were mined. The lake visible today was formed in the former mining area. The eruption occurred 10 million years ago. At that time, a crater lake formed, which was visited by numerous animals. Fossil finds of 13 prehistoric horses, antelopes, and rhinos attest to the subtropical climate at that time. The fossils were excellently preserved in the lake sediment.

The water is impressive: each time you visit the water is a different color! Simply great 👍

The path through the Gauchach Gorge is especially not recommended for people with even a slight fear of heights! I myself had no problem with that, but my hiking companion had to go beyond its limits. The path is sometimes very narrow, slippery and muddy, there are no steel "retaining fences" like in the Wutach Gorge. Absolute surefootedness, good physical condition and good shoes are a real MUST here! It becomes particularly problematic when a hiker comes towards you and you have to pass each other. I would classify the section as difficult depending on the weather conditions. Still a real highlight for me and highly recommended for advanced hikers (sticks are helpful !!); you are in a real jungle with a breathtaking view into the depths of the Gauchach!

A variety of herbs and flowering plants grow around the emerald-green lake. We spent a lot of time identifying the species. Examples include: sweet woodruff, spring vetch, kidney vetch, woolly viburnum, wood cranesbill, and cypress milkweed.

A beautiful natural spectacle to linger.

Visually the largest, most beautiful, covered bridge over the Wutach. At the mouth of the Gauchach. Ideal for sheltering when it rains. When the sun is shining, it's nice to rest in the spacious area around the mouth.
