Amazing view from this mountain, even with a summit cross 😉

The Stations of the Cross have been redesigned. Unfortunately, the church was closed. I would definitely visit the signposted viewpoint. Parking is available just below at the Messnerhaus restaurant, which is also recommended.

Until the end of the 17th century, the 744-meter-high Birkenberg, along with the nearby 731-meter-high Heidelberg, was called Hedelberg. Then the name changed to Birkenberg, reflecting the alternating field-forest management practiced at the time. Over the course of fifteen to forty years, the birch trees growing here were felled, and the remaining area was grazed until the population of fast-growing birch trees regenerated. Thus, the cycle began again. At the end of the 19th century, this form of forestry was discontinued, and the area was converted to conifers.

At 901 meters, the Entenbühl is the second-highest elevation in the German part of the Upper Palatinate Forest after the 938-meter-high Kreuzfelsen in the Cham district. Below the summit lies the Hubertus Chapel. It was built as a wartime bunker in 1938 and converted into a place of worship by the Upper Palatinate Forest Association in 1998. The wooden summit cross was erected in 2000.

The climb up the Armesberg to the church is rewarded with a great view of the Kemnather and Kulmainer Land
