The Göpel shaft system, unique in Europe, is the heart of the “Historic Lehesten Slate Mining” monument ensemble and the trademark of the slate park. Mountain meadows should not be mowed before mid-June for the first time in the year. The Ebertswiese is now in all its glory at the end of May, as a refuge for colours, plants and animals. At its edge the mountain lake in a former quarry. Some Indian and Wild West feelings come up when you see it. Tip: take the path behind the lake to get a great view from above.

The dam of the Neustadt Dam was built between 1904 and 1905. The dam supplies drinking water to the city and parts of the Nordhausen district. Swimming and recreational sports in the reservoir are prohibited. The dam may not be entered either. Hike around the lake is possible.

The Ebertswiese is famous for its abundance of flowers and has been a nature reserve since 1936.
