The Drachenstein offers a wonderful view towards Inselsberg and Hörselberg. It is located on the wine route between “Hohe Sonne” and “Mosbacher Linde”.

The Landgrafenschlucht can easily be combined with the Drachenschlucht as a circular tour. There are places to stop for refreshments in the Hohe Sonne along this route.

The Landgrafenschlucht is simply beautiful and has a lot to offer in terms of flora and fauna. After the very touristy Drachenschlucht, it offers the crowning glory of the canyon tour. 🤩

The inner courtyard is well worth seeing with the Palas, the cistern, its half-timbered buildings and the medieval castle garden. Everything is renovated and beautifully prepared.

Here at 978 m you have a really great all-round view of other peaks in the Thuringian Forest and the Rhön, up to the Ettersberg near Weimar and Oberhof. With very good visibility, such as winter inversion weather conditions, the view extends to the Brocken in the Harz Mountains, to the Schneeberg (Fichtelgebirge) and to the western Ore Mountains. You can also see the “Wilde Gera” (A 71) motorway bridge, the largest arched bridge in Germany with a span of 252 m. https://schneekopf.eu/ And if you want, you can crack the 1000 meter mark here on the observation tower for three euros. Diligence also has its price.

After three weeks of hiking in Thuringia, I can say that this is the most beautiful natural spectacle I have seen. Great how the path meanders through the moss-covered rocks of the gorge.

The Drachenschlucht is attractive in any weather. However, you should avoid them on certain days (Sundays and public holidays), as there is a lot of hustle and bustle here. And just to let the impressions, narrow narrow places, waterfall, stairs, etc., have an effect on you, you should be here very early or later in the afternoon if possible. Personally, I would like to recommend the round starting from the Hohe Sonne hiking car park (free car parking), over to the Dreiherrenstein, down the Landgrafenschlucht (is much more lonely) and on the other side of the Mariental (possibly with a small detour to the Sängerwiese and if you are in a good mood you can continue to the Wartburg) and then up the Drachenschlucht and back to the starting point.

The Landgrafen Gorge was developed and made accessible by employees of the Society for Job Promotion, Employment and Structural Development as part of job creation measures from 1992-1997 with funds from the Federal Employment Agency. This has resulted in an attractive hiking trail from the Mariental to the Weinstrasse.(...from the information board) I say hat 🎩 off! An outstanding work performance by the people who opened up the gorge at the time and built the paths and bridges. I was not aware of this until now. Many thanks for that!

You can also hike along the Dornheckenweg -Herzogseiche-Weinstrasse-Hohe Sonne-Drachenschlucht-Eisenach Mariental. A moderately difficult tour.
