The church in Landow on Rügen is the oldest half-timbered church building in northern Germany and in the entire southeastern Baltic region. People have been visiting and maintaining this local church for over 700 years and you can feel that very impressively. Until shortly after the Second World War, the Landow church was used for Protestant services, but also for Catholic masses for locals, refugees and new settlers. Due to the desolate state of the church, there were no more services from 1970 onwards. The valuable baroque interior was removed because there was no money for the necessary renovation of the church. The church was then left to itself, neglected and fell into disrepair. In the 1980s, a few committed GDR citizens managed to get the necessary authorities to make an initial emergency security measure for the building, which was in danger of collapsing, and the most necessary repairs were carried out. In 1991/92 and 2002/03, funding was provided and with the help of many donations, some of them private, basic safety measures were carried out on the tower, windows, roof, floor and external masonry. Since then, further careful conservation and renovation measures have been carried out in small steps. Since 1991, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Festival has been a guest in the summer and since 2000, the Samtens parish and the Friends of the Church of Landow have used this church as a cultural and walkway church. Located on a slight hill, the church of Samtens forms the core of the town. 1 A church in the town was first mentioned in 318, but no known remains of it remain. The current church was built in the 15th century, first the choir and a short time later the nave and sacristy. A tower was built around 1630/40, which was replaced by the current tower after it collapsed in 1703. In the 17th century, extensive renovation and redesign took place in the Baroque style. In 1884 the church received a western porch as a new sacristy. In 1935-36 the whitewashed baroque painting was restored. It is a three-bay brick building on a foundation made of unfinished boulders. The adjoining two-bay rectangular choir is slightly retracted and supported by buttresses. The nave is illuminated by wide segmental arched windows with brick ribs and leaded glazing. A small tower integrated into the gable roof of the church is a half-timbered structure with a copper sheet hood. Brick ribbed vaults that extend high into the roof space determine the interior. The interior decoration includes wall paintings from the middle of the 15th century, epitaphs of the von der Osten family from 1602-21, a baptismal angel from around 1700 and a pulpit from around 1885. A beautiful 700 year old church in the small village of Landow. Exhibitions, concerts and the occasional church service take place there. A visit is always worthwhile!

It's worth resting there and just enjoying a moment's peace and quiet.
