It also gives you a stiff hike with around 700 metres of height gain. It is all worth it, however, as the views out over the North Pennines are super expansive from out over the eastern side of the hill, a virtual moonscape of moorland. On the western side, you have distant views of the Lake District. There is a cairn on the top, but the true summit sits within the communications compound, which has restricted access.

Big drop and climb out of the dip. Very picturesque though. Well worth a photo which of course I forgot to do!

Traffic free road. Pick good weather the day you ride, very changeable up here. Take it easy its a long climb with outstanding views. Extra care coming back down, I reached 42 mph, take note of the gravel or you'll lose your wheel.

Steep but lovely - the highest paved road in England. Closed to motor vehicles too!

Well-situated for adventures in the North Pennines and the Eastern Lakeland Fells, King’s Meaburn is a small village in the valley of the River Lyvennet. An attractive crossing built of mellow red sandstone, Ousenstand Bridge crosses the Eden just to the south of Temple Sowerby. It is crossed on the long-distance Lady Anne's Way, which journeys from Skipton Castle to Penrith.

If you make it to the top without walking you deserve the lovely descent. Watch out for sheep on the road, take care.

Plenty of climbing in the remaining 5km after that first farm. Take it easy and save yourself.

This ford is passable on foot over the foot bridge but if you're heading East get a very easy gear set before you try and climb the steep hill on the opposite side!
