Great little family ride

Low Gardens Bridge spans the River Lowther at Earl Henry's Drive. It is an old Grade II listed stone arch bridge which has a new steel beam bridge next to it.

Wonderful hard pack and gravel trail from Penrith to Lowther Castle. The route weaves along the river towards the caravan park so does have occasional traffic, but brilliant for kids and families too.

Very Cycling friendly pub. Has yurts out back to stay in. Good good for bike packing and the C2C route. Team Sky stayed here in 2012 apparently?

Great Strickland is a village on the River Leith, south of the town of Penrith. It is a great base for outdoor adventures, with the Lake District to the west and the North Pennines to the east. The Strickland Arms has B&B facilities, as well as bunkhouse facilities, perfect for walkers. It also serves good food for that all-important post hike refuel.

An attractive crossing built of mellow red sandstone, Ousenstand Bridge crosses the Eden just to the south of Temple Sowerby. It is crossed on the long-distance Lady Anne's Way, which journeys from Skipton Castle to Penrith.

Brougham Hall has lived a chequered life. At the time of the Norman Conquest it was in the hands of the Veteriponts, ancestors to the Cliffords. It was Lady Anne who oversaw the renovation of the hall in 1659. However, the hall's alterations did not stop there and in the 19th century it became the residence of the Lord Chancellor of England, earning it the moniker of the 'Windsor of the North'. Today there are some small shops and a cafe. There are plans afoot to open a museum and gallery.
