We only knew Plau am See by name before and stopped there for two days on our way back from the Baltic Sea. It's a very beautiful area. The cycling and hiking trails are well-developed. Of course, it's not very busy in February. Perfect for relaxing hikes! 👍

The Bobzin hydroelectric power station near Lübz benefits from the steep gradient of the Elde River there: The adjacent lock, with a lift height of 6.80 meters, is considered the deepest in Mecklenburg. The Zieher family took over the power station and the farmstead of the caretakers' families in 1993. The house has since served as a guesthouse. A vertical water turbine installed in the power station in 1999 once again generates electricity. It also serves as an exhibition space for the Museum of Regional Electricity Supply. The coal shortage after the First World War, among other things, triggered the construction of these facilities. The hydroelectric power station of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin State Electricity Works and the Bobzin lock were built between 1923 and 1925. To integrate this lock into the course of the Elde, a section of the river was straightened, and locks dating back to 1803 were decommissioned. Two of these can still be found in Fahrenhorst and Forsthof near Kuppentin. The power plant remained in operation until its Soviet dismantling in 1946 and, using new technology, began generating electricity again in 1954. Due to technical problems and water shortages (agriculture required a lot of water), the plant was shut down again in 1974.

The gravel tour around Lake Plau is a varied day trip that's particularly good starting from Plötzenhöhe. From there, you can enjoy sweeping views of the lake before continuing along natural paths and narrow trails along the southern shore, with views of the Leistener Lanke and through tranquil forests. In Bad Stuer, you can stop for a swim or a snack before continuing along gravel roads and back roads along the northern shore. In the west, a stop at Lenzer Höhe is worthwhile, offering a stunning panorama before the trail leads back through forests and open fields to Plötzenhöhe. The approximately 50-kilometer loop offers perfect conditions for gravel bikers—with a mix of athletic challenge, nature experience, and relaxation. Top! 👍

The lakeside road at Plötzenhöhe on Lake Plau is a particularly beautiful stretch for cyclists. The path runs along the shore and offers impressive views of the southern part of Lake Plau. From there, you can see far across the water to the wooded shores on the other side. The view is particularly spectacular at sunset – the light reflects off the lake, while the treetops are bathed in warm gold. The path itself is lined with ancient beech and pine trees, and small clearings open up every now and then with views of the shimmering water. A perfect place to stop for a moment, take a deep breath, and enjoy the scenery – whether with a camera or simply with your eyes.
